What Sequence is built to do
Sequence works directly with media on your Mac. Its current app uses on-device Core ML transcription, then lets you search the transcript, hide individual words or whole sentences, reorder sentences, add markers, and create sibling variants without changing the original cut.
Its cleanup tools cover filler words, profanity, silence, and retake suggestions. Audio tools include loudness analysis and normalisation, plus external-audio linking and sync. You can export a finished video or audio file, transcript and caption files, or a timeline for Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve.
Where Descript goes further
Descript is a wider production environment. It combines text-based editing with recording, scenes and visual layers, comments, project links, live collaboration, and direct publishing. That makes it a stronger fit when several people need to record, edit, review, and distribute work in one connected workspace.
The architectural difference matters: Descript uploads added media for transcription, while Sequence performs transcription on your Mac. Neither approach is universally better. The right choice depends on whether local processing or connected teamwork is more important to the project.
A fair way to choose
Choose Sequence for a focused, private first pass on long spoken recordings, especially when Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve remains the creative home of the project. Choose Descript when the text editor itself needs to be the shared production home, with collaboration and publishing options built around it.
