Tune Caption Behaviour

Preview caption formatting

Open Settings → Transcription → Captions. The live preview shows how your caption text will be grouped and wrapped, including the longest line. Use it as a readability check before reviewing playback or exporting to an editor.

Sentence grouping

Use Max Words Per Sentence to choose the grouping limit:

• Auto: use the default sentence-splitting behaviour.
• Words: choose a maximum of 2 to 100 words per sentence.
• Seconds: choose an approximate sentence duration from 1 to 30 seconds.

These limits are distinct from the transcript’s manual Break Sentence and Group Sentences edits. See transcript editing when you want to change an editorial sentence group.

Line length and words per caption

Adjust Characters Per Line from 8 to 120 for wrapping and Words Per Caption from 1 to 30 for shorter caption chunks. The preview updates as you change the values. Shorter lines are useful for smaller screens; review names and long words before settling on a limit.

Caption appearance and grouping depend on the destination. A subtitle sidecar does not preserve the player’s font, styling, or progressive word reveal, and its grouping can differ from the preview.

Edited words and profanity

Export the variant or programme you intend to deliver. Caption and transcript output follows that edit’s visible words and active profanity-redaction choices. Correcting transcript text changes the output text, not the recorded speech.

Save text and subtitle files

Sequence supports TXT, CSV, SBV, SRT, ASS, and VTT. Open the transcript actions menu, choose Export Transcript File, select the required format, and choose where to save it. You do not need to render a video or export an editor timeline first.

Settings → Export selects additional transcript formats for editor-handoff sidecars. Check the saved files in your target application rather than assuming the on-screen preview is the final subtitle layout.

Editor titles and finished video

For editable titles, follow the Final Cut Pro export guide or the DaVinci Resolve export guide. Title styles and word limits are destination-specific; a Subtitle title template is not a closed-caption track.

Direct Export produces finished video or audio, but does not burn transcript captions into the picture. Export a subtitle file separately when your delivery needs one.
